The Excellence in GSI Awards Ceremony (May 23) is the region’s only award that celebrates and elevates green stormwater infrastructure projects and innovations, the triple bottom line (TBL) benefits of a nature-based approach to stormwater management, and the partners who bring these projects to life in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Buy tickets.

On behalf of the Sustainable Business Network of Greater Philadelphia (SBN), the GSI Partners will recognize excellence in GSI in the following categories: Public, Private, and Innovation. Winning applications will highlight the TBL benefits of a green infrastructure approach to stormwater management.

Congratulations Community Academy of Philadelphia Charter School.

The Community Academy of Philadelphia Charter School, located within the Tookany-Tacony watershed, lies on a 5.21-acre parcel, very little of which is green space. Without vegetation to naturally absorb runoff, the school has been required to pay extremely high stormwater fees.

Using funds from the Philadelphia Water Department’s Greened Acre Retrofit Program (GARP), Infrastructure Solution Services (ISS) partnered with the Career Academy of Philadelphia (CAP) to design, build, and maintain 4 subsurface basins on the Charter School’s property. The installed basins keep 3,000,000 gallons of stormwater out of the combined sewer systems annually, while also allowing the school to receive credits against its stormwater fee. Cumulative savings of over $4.5 million over the course of 45 years is projected, freeing up much-needed dollars for the Philadelphia school.

In addition to the enormous stormwater management benefits, the project also functions to make underground GSI visible to the next generation of students and Philadelphia’s workforce. Through a pilot initiative, ISS is providing educational programming assistance for a math class that includes mini-lessons on stormwater and infiltration as well as career exposure and resources to staff counselors to support junior and senior students. ISS’s goal is to promote GSI to young people while providing related educational activities and curricula to demonstrate how they can be a part of the solution.

By installing cost-saving GSI projects on school properties, greater dollars are available for school budgets, decreasing the economic stress on Philadelphia schools. Furthermore, providing opportunities for GSI career exposure prepares students to take advantage of increasing job opportunities within the GSI industry, as past and current infrastructure degrades and are replaced with innovative GSI projects.

ISS additionally awarded a $5,000 environmental stewardship grant to the school for any science need, which further supports innovative educational and career exposure activities.
