At the beginning of November, we saw the release of Greenworks, the City of Philadelphia’s updated comprehensive sustainability plan. We were pleased to see the recommendations the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) made to the Office of Sustainability on behalf of our members were incorporated into the final version of the Greenworks plan. SBN’s recommendations focused on promoting partnerships and interagency coordination for the advancement of Green City, Clean Waters;increasing the levels of environmentally-preferred purchasing; expanding energy benchmarking to the residential sector; supporting expanded marketing opportunities for solar energy; and supporting workforce development initiatives in the renewable energy sector.

Jamie Gauthier, SBN’s Executive Director, was interviewed by PlanPhilly on the grassroots approach to this version of the Greenworks plan. “We have some really ambitious goals, to be the most sustainable city in the country, and we are not going to be able to achieve them without the help of the community […] At the end of the day, if we are going to move forward as a city, we depend on the actions that people take in their lives. And if they don’t understand the goals or how they affect them, that’s not going to happen.”
